Barbican Concert Hall

London

Commercial Project

The Barbican Estate’s original construction was undertaken in the 1970s and 80s, built by John Laing Plc with the works spanning over 10 years.  The Concert Hall is home to the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and has become renowned for its architectural warmth and distinctive acoustics. The ornate timber panelling behind the stage was introduced in the 1990s to improve the acoustic performance of the hall. We were approached in 2017 to carry out a major refurbishment of the panelling, comprising the full removal and return to NBJ’s premises, refurbing, adapting, refinishing and reinstallation within a five week duration. We also applied a spread of flame lacquer to the panelling. In 2017, proposals were also floated for a new concert hall for the LSO, but these plans were put to one side and the LSO will be remaining at the Barbican, meaning audiences will enjoy this iconic space for many years to come.
