Our Ethos

Our team of specialists thrive on challenges, meeting complex problems with innovative and elegant solutions. With every brief we embark on a new journey, from critical appraisal and research, design and development through to manufacturing and installation.

Experience & Expertise

The business was founded by Neil and Sharon Burke in 1982. To start with it operated from a garage in their local wharf, less than a mile from where it is now. Today, with an office in London and a factory at Airfield Park in Market Harborough, we remain family owned but are now an industry leader with an array of award-winning work behind us. Our reputation extends around the world, with projects successfully completed in Mainland Europe and as far afield as the Middle East.

  • Our mission is to create successful partnerships with our customers to achieve the finest quality bespoke joinery, to their individual specifications and requirements. To achieve this, we aim to continually improve and develop our operations to become the leading producer of quality specialist joinery and cabinetry in the UK. This requires us to be best in class, continually investing in cutting-edge technology and machinery to ensure our expert team of designers, makers and fitters have the leading tools at their disposal.

  • We retain an immensely talented and dedicated team, both in the office and the factory. Our workshop staff include highly skilled traditional draughtsmen, joiners, cabinet makers and specialist finishers with many years of training and experience – first-time visitors to the site often remark on the chemistry between them.

  • Our equipment and facilities mean we can offer clients unrivalled efficiency and consistency. Our production space has expanded to 28,000 square feet, with state-of-the-art machinery and a separate machine shop and finishing shop on site. We also have a showroom and sample library, where we welcome visitors.

Our factory is broken down into a series of departments such as logistics, design and the factory floor. Each is responsible for its own maintenance. We leave nothing to chance. Equipment is tested regularly and maintained immaculately to ensure every job can be executed to the highest spec and with maximum efficiency.

Passion & People

We are true champions of our people – and this is reflected in the uniquely positive and collaborative working environment you'll find in Market Harborough.

02

  • Every area of the workshop is operated by an individual craftsman who develops his or her own expertise in a certain area of joinery of finishing. While collaboration is in our DNA, we also have a strong commitment to autonomy. Our joiners are encouraged to work independently, to explore and expand on their craft. In this way, we stay ahead of the curve. We celebrate our people through training and investment and offer a number of apprenticeships every year.

  • We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with collaborators, from upholsterers to metalworkers, at every stage of the design, manufacture and installation processes. Our designers work alongside architects, interior designers, contractors and end users, listening carefully to concept ideas to ensure our design solutions accurately reflect their brief. And our installation teams work with professional and care, integrating respectfully with other trades.

  • To extend our legacy we offer a number of apprenticeships every year. By training up the next generation of designers, joiners, machiners and finishers, we are investing in the future growth of our own business while supporting the health and effectiveness of the wider industry.

“NBJ have performed skilfully and professionally to an extent that we have established between us a genuine and highly valued level of trust and understanding.”

Environmental Responsibility

We use new thinking and new approaches to put efficiency at the core of everything we do. We work hard to turn our commitments into action, whether it's our ambitious solar energy project or our novel dust recycling scheme.

03

  • Sourced responsibly, timber is one of the most sustainable materials on the planet; when combined with our expert craftsmanship it can be expected to last. But unsustainable timber production poses a major threat to communities and habitats worldwide. As a significant user of timber and wood products, we have a responsibility to current and future generations when selecting timber. As such, we purchase all wood from certified sources to ensure the legality of the timber and promote environmental, social and economic sustainability.

  • Taking a proactive approach to improving our overall environmental performance, we have installed an on-site solar photo-voltaic project at our premises in Lutterworth. This 100 KwH installation not only contributes to our low-carbon electricity supply but also allows us to manage our usage more effectively and ride out electricity price hikes in the future.

  • Waste extraction is swift and seamless so the workshop is clean and well-maintained at all times. Any waste wood we generate is chipped, processed or re-used for heating. Wood is the sole sources of heating at our Lutterworth premises. All our paper and cardboard waste is recycled. Our state of the art extraction even collects dust, which can then be recycled. And no more than one skip per week leaves the site.

  • NBJ is committed to the protection of the environment and promotion of sustainable development in all aspects of our work. We accept our responsibility to minimise the environmental impact of our work and take a pro-active approach to improving our overall performance. We scrutinise suppliers, work to eliminate all waste, use local labour and encourage green forms of transport.

  • We care about the origins of the timber we purchase, which is why we always procure from credible, independent Chain of Custody sources based on international standards and norms.

NBJ is a certified FSC® Chain of Custody supplier in accordance with BM Trada and we are committed to compliance with FSC® standards FSC-STD-40-004 and FSC-STD-50-001 EN.
